PINCHBOTTOM'S SUB:CONSCIOUS -- WHERE BURLESQUE MEETS DOWNTOWN THEATER Collective:Unconscious and Pinchbottom conspire to put Burlesque back under the sign on Church Street On April 14, 2006 at 10pm, the lacy fringe curtains will part on PINCHBOTTOM'S SUB:CONSCIOUS, a new monthly burlesque series at Collective:Unconscious, and the sign hanging on the side of 279 Church Street -- spelling out, in a vintage theatrical font, "BURLESQUE" -- will be lit once again, for the first time this century. The sign has a long and storied heritage, a provenance so risqué that this press release is forbidden from mentioning the name of the burlesque house with which it was once associated. But as the 20th Century waned, so too did that theater, nudity driven from TriBeCa by mayoral pique. Though the sign remained, there has been no regular burlesque show in the venue since the late 1900s. When Collective:Unconscious took over in 2005, they decided, rather than remove the sign, to make it accurate, and so began a citywide search for a Burlesque company that would fit with the Collective:Unconscious mission. And the company they found was Pinchbottom. "Pinchbottom's Sub:Conscious will honor both the history of the space and the history of the company now in it," said Pinchbottom. "The shows will be sexy, intelligent, risqué, and -- above all -- theatrical." "Each month, acts will be booked around a different central theme. These themes range in scope from the specific to the gloriously abstract. I will draw from my extensive black book of talented burlesque, boylesque, variety, fetish, musical, comedy, puppet, and theatrical performers to make each show a sumptuous fusion of burlesque and downtown theater." "Our initial theme, in celebration of Good Friday and Passover, will be 'Blasphemy'. In May (the traditional release month for Star Wars movies) the theme is 'Science Fiction'." With the exception of the premiere on April 14th, PINCHBOTTOM'S SUB:CONSCIOUS will perform on the third Friday of every month at 10pm. The shows are hosted by Nasty Canasta and Jonny Porkpie. Performers scheduled to appear include Julie Atlas Muz, Jo Boobs, Dirty Martini, Veronika Sweet, Anita Cookie, Rose Wood, Dottie Lux, Schaffer the Darklord, Zero Boy, Ammo, GiGi La Femme, Creamy Stevens, Delirium Tremens, and more.
